NETFLIX SMASH HIT FILM WATCHED MORE THAN 21 MILLION TIMES IN JUST THREE DAYS

Netflix's biggest film this week has been watched more than a staggering 21 million times - putting it light years ahead of any opposition.

Zack Snyder's Star Wars-inspired space opera Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver centres around Kora (played by Sofia Boutella), an ex-Imperium soldier who once resided in a serene settlement on the outskirts of a remote moon. However, the tranquility was shattered when a despotic regime, from which Kora seeks refuge, imposed a menacing threat upon the settlement's very existence.

A follow-up to Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, the second instalment debuted on the platform on April 19 where it shot straight to the top of this week's global top ten - racking up a gigantic 21,400,000 views in just three days, according to Tudum. It has pummelled Woody Woodpecker Goes To Camp into second place on 18m views. Other movies in the top rundown include Millie Bobby Brown's dragon film Damsel, animated family comedy Hotel Transylvania and thriller What Jennifer Did.

The success of the space blockbuster - which cost a reported £131 million to produce - is all the more remarkable as both parts have been met with a rather lukewarm response from critics. The second instalment currently has a poor 52 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a mere 5.2 on IMDb.

But none of this seems to have put off viewers, who appear to be lapping it up. Here, we break down everything you need to know about Rebel Moon.

What's the plot of Rebel Moon?

Rebel Moon tells the tale of Kora, a mysterious stranger with a hidden past, who finds herself on a distant moon after a crash landing. There, she integrates into a tranquil community of farmers. However, when the oppressive Regent Balisarius and his ruthless emissary, Admiral Noble, discover the farmers' inadvertent dealings with the Bloodaxes, a formidable group of rebels, Kora becomes their last hope for survival.

With the task of rallying fighters to defend the people of Veldt, Kora, accompanied by Gunnar, an idealistic farmer unfamiliar with the harsh realities of war, embarks on a journey across different worlds to locate the Bloodaxes. Along the way, they assemble a motley crew of warriors, each driven by a shared desire for redemption: Kai, a skilled pilot and mercenary; General Titus, a legendary leader; Nemesis, a master swordswoman; Tarak, a captive with a royal lineage; and Milius, a fighter for the resistance.

Meanwhile, on Veldt, Jimmy, an ancient mechanised guardian, reawakens with a newfound purpose. But as the newly formed revolutionaries must learn to trust each other and unite against the impending threat from the forces of the Motherworld, they face the daunting challenge of fighting as one cohesive unit.
